Non-theory suggestions are (1) Write "secession" similarly to "secessionist" using an N hook on the Ish. (2) If already written, a quicker way to distinguish would be to insert a heavy or light dot before the circle+hook, respectively. This would not look like an initial "i" vowel because the outline would be sitting on the line, not through it. "Session" is shown for comparison.
